Plan your route

Setting Off from Glasgow
Your journey begins in the vibrant city of Glasgow, Scotland’s cultural hub. Before hitting the road, make sure your campervan is stocked with supplies, including food, maps, and camping essentials. If time allows, take a stroll through the West End’s charming lanes or grab a coffee from one of the city’s many excellent cafes.
Leaving Glasgow, head north on the A82, a stunning route that winds its way through Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Stop at Luss for a quick leg stretch and to admire the shimmering waters of Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest freshwater loch.

Through the Highlands: Glencoe
As you continue north, you’ll pass through Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes. Towering mountains and deep valleys create a rugged yet beautiful setting, ideal for a short hike or a scenic picnic. Be sure to take a moment at the Glencoe Visitor Centre to learn about the area’s rich history and the infamous 1692 massacre.
Further along the route, you’ll reach Fort William, often dubbed the Outdoor Capital of the UK. If you’re up for an adventure, consider a detour to hike Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. Otherwise, Fort William makes for a great stop to refuel, enjoy a meal, or explore nearby attractions such as Neptune’s Staircase on the Caledonian Canal.

Through the Highlands: Fort William
From Fort William, take the A830, known as the Road to the Isles, towards Mallaig. This stretch is filled with breathtaking coastal views, sandy beaches, and famous landmarks such as the Glenfinnan Viaduct, recognizable to many as the Harry Potter “Hogwarts Express” bridge.
Once in Mallaig, you have two options: take the ferry to Armadale on Skye (book in advance during peak seasons) or drive via the Skye Bridge, which requires a detour through Kyle of Lochalsh. Both routes offer spectacular scenery and unique experiences.

Exploring Skye
Upon arrival, the Isle of Skye greets you with its rugged beauty, mystical landscapes, and charming villages. Some must-visit spots include:
- The Old Man of Storr – A striking rock formation and one of the island’s most famous sights.
- Fairy Pools – Beautiful, crystal-clear waterfalls perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Quiraing – A dramatic landslip offering some of the best hiking and photography opportunities on Skye.
- Portree – The island’s main town, where you’ll find colorful harborside houses, great restaurants, and local shops.

Campervan Stops & Campsites
Scotland is very campervan-friendly, but it’s essential to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and park responsibly. Some recommended spots for overnight stays include:
- Sligachan Campsite – Stunning views and great facilities near the Cuillin mountains.
- Kinloch Campsite – A peaceful site with lochside views in Dunvegan.
- Uig Bay Campsite – A great base for exploring the Trotternish Peninsula.

Heading Home
When it’s time to return to Glasgow, consider taking a different route back through Loch Ness and Inverness, allowing you to explore even more of Scotland’s stunning landscapes. If time permits, stop at Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks.
